With the changing landscape and new dynamics in the hospitality and tourism sector, the college has positioned itself to confront the emerging dynamics in the industry in order to remain vibrant.
Kenya Utalii College (KUC) has intensified plans to align its capacity building programmes towards areas that are key to the recovery of the hospitality and tourism sector in Kenya. The capacity building institution in hospitality and tourism has put together a team to look at possible improvement areas, key among which is the review of the teaching curriculum.
The delivery of the college mandate – capacity building for hospitality and tourism sector – is heavily dependent on a vibrant tourism and hospitality sector through which professional development programmes are offered. The year 2020 saw tourism and hospitality slump, losing all gains made to grow the industry both for international arrivals and domestic tourism over the years.
Paralyzed activities in the sector in 2020 and a slow uptake this year where a number of establishments are yet to begin operations have hugely contributed to the financial strain at the institution. With the changing landscape and new dynamics in the hospitality and tourism sector, the college has positioned itself to confront the emerging dynamics in the industry in order to remain vibrant.
Growth and development in hospitality and tourism is founded on continuous improvement in all areas including employee skills. Key areas that will boost the full recovery of the industry, and which the college will contribute to significantly, include professional development of employees, increased levels of hygiene and sanitation and better crisis management.
Kenya Utalii College appreciates the central role of it’s mandate in the industry’s revival and growth, and is at an advanced stage in revamping it’s curriculum and developing innovative capacity building programmes that are in line with industry trends, especially now when the full recovery of the sector from the effects of Covid-19 is dependent on well trained employees.
Through the Tourism Industry / KUC Liaision committee, the college continues to put together new market-driven professional development courses which will be offered to employees in the sector at no cost.
The college has also undertaken expansion projects, including the construction of the Individual Training Kitchen (ITK) that is aimed at expanding student capacity in key areas such as culinary arts as well as food and beverage service.
The college will soon reintroduce self-sponsored and short courses to bridge the demand gap that has been occasioned by downward revision of student numbers due to Covid-19 restrictions. This has not only affected the diploma and certificate courses, but other commercial income generating activities including Utalii Hotel operations, short courses, self-sponsored courses, management development programmes, refresher courses and other tailor-made consultancy programmes.
